Afternoon Rain

Afternoon Rain

Inspired by the familiar rhythm of afternoon showers in Costa Rica, where I spent my childhood, Afternoon Rain brings a personal memory of the tropics into a contemporary sculptural form. During the rainy season, passing afternoon showers are part of the rhythm of everyday life, a natural phenomenon that has stayed with me and continues to inspire my work.

Hand-built ceramic cups are arranged along a copper framework, creating an interplay of rounded forms and clean lines. Some of the ceramic cups are nested within one another, creating double layers that add depth, dimension, and intriguing shadows. These layered forms bring a sense of movement and visual richness to the composition, while the repetition of the individual elements evokes the rhythm of raindrops falling at different intervals.

Balancing geometric structure with the tactile character of the ceramics, Afternoon Rain captures both the energy of a passing shower and the quiet familiarity of a childhood memory. The sculpture brings a distinctive presence to a wall, inviting the viewer to explore its changing depths, textures, and patterns.
