Double Afternoon Rain

Inspired by the familiar afternoon showers of Costa Rica, where I spent my childhood, Double Afternoon Rain expands on a memory of the tropics through a larger, more expansive composition. The passing showers of the rainy season have a rhythm all their own, and this sculpture translates that natural pattern into an interplay of ceramic forms, depth, and copper lines.

Hand-built ceramic cups are arranged along a copper framework, creating a rhythmic pattern of rounded shapes against a clean, linear structure. Some cups are nested within other cups, forming double layers that add depth and dimension. These overlapping forms create subtle shadows and a sense of visual discovery, allowing the composition to change as the viewer moves around it and the light shifts across its surface.

With its generous scale, Double Afternoon Rain allows the rhythm of the ceramic elements to unfold across a broader expanse of wall. The balance of repetition, layered forms, and architectural lines captures both the energy of a tropical shower and the personal memories behind its inspiration.
